He saw the weeding out of followers and true disciples.<\/p>\n<p>(3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0circumstances caused Him to withdraw<\/p>\n<p>(a)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0either King or nothing<\/p>\n<p>(b)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Jewish power in Jerusalem was becoming more consolidated in their attempts to kill Him (ie, Pharisees and Sadduccees were aligning themselves together)<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0keen realization of who He was and His mission<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Jesus was not seeking popularity (and wasn&#8217;t getting it at this point anyway).<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Jesus didn&#8217;t want to establish an earthly kingdom<\/p>\n<p>(3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0He saw the cross before Him and set His face as stone to get to it (Luke 9.51 &#8211; this statement followed soon after this retreat).<\/p>\n<p>(4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Transfiguration occured within days of this retreat.<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0For those who followed Him<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0opinion polls were down<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0some were leaving and some remained<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0The Need to Question (13)<\/p>\n<p>Background<\/p>\n<p>His name was not Jesus Christ. That was a title. His name was Jesus bar Joseph.<\/p>\n<p>Others called Him Christ the most, then Lord, then last of all (once) Son of Man.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus called Himself (83 times) the Son of Man.<\/p>\n<p>In Matthew we have Son of Man and in Mark and Luke it is merely Who I am. The difference is in the audience, Jews versus Gentiles.<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0Son of Man is historically equal to Son of God<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0Daniel 7.9<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0inner court<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0divine figure (Philippians 2)<\/p>\n<p>(3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0descending and ascending (comp Acts 1.9-11)<\/p>\n<p>iii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Deific assertions<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Matthew 9.1-8, only God can forgive sins<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0John 5.1-18, Matthew 12.1-14, Mark 2-God made the Sabbath<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Draw your own conclusions<\/p>\n<p>iv.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0He is God<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0Who do people say He is?<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0John the Baptist or Elijah<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0why John the Baptist? He had been executed days earlier and people saw them together.<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0he was the forerunner of the Messiah. As was Elijah. They may have transferred the work of John as the messenger who announces the Christ (Malachi 3) to Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>(3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0People thought Elijah was to return from Heaven for he had never died (2 Kings 2). A few days later James, John, and Peter see Jesus with Elijah and Moses on the Mount of Transfiguration.<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0Jeremiah or a prophet<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0announces the good news<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the prophet was thought by some to be the good one who overcomes politically the oppressing nations.<\/p>\n<p>c.\u00a0Who do you say He is?<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0John 6.66-70\u00a0\u00a0the Holy One of God (=what the others thought of Him, good man)<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0Matthew 16.16\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the Anointed One, the Son of the living God<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0The Need to Respond to the Son of Man (13-16)<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0How do we respond to such an One?<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0John the Baptist\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Then He was merely a messenger of God bringing good news of a coming king, not much to worship.<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0Jeremiah\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Then he was a good man who teaches good morals, not much to worship.<\/p>\n<p>iii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0God\u00a0\u00a0If He be God, and I believe Him to be, then He must be worshipped and obeyed. We will look into this aspect of Christ over the next few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0In light of who Jesus is, what must we do?<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0draw closer through the disciplines<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0thank Him<\/p>\n<p>iii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0tell others<\/p>\n<p>c.\u00a0Matthew 28.18-20 as benediction.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u00a92012 Teach for God Ministries.
